COVID-19 testing
There are two types of coronavirus tests: diagnostic tests and antibody detection.
Diagnostic tests indicate active coronavirus infection. There are two types of diagnostic tests: molecular tests, such as RT-PCR, which detect genetic material, and antigen tests, which detect specific proteins on the surface of the virus itself.

Diagnostic tests indicate active coronavirus infection. There are two types of diagnostic tests: molecular tests, such as RT-PCR, which detect genetic material, and antigen tests, which detect specific proteins on the surface of the virus itself.
The antibody test detects the antibody concentration in blood. Antibodies occur as a result of the body’s response to infection. In order for antibodies to be measured, it is necessary for several days, up to a few weeks, to pass from contact with the virus, which depends on the patient’s immune system and the sensitivity of the test used. The duration of antibody retention in blood has not yet been reliably determined. So far, scientists have not been able to determine if their presence means you are immune to re-infection.
The molecular test, also known as diagnostic RT-PCR test, uses nasopharyngeal swab and / or throat swab and saliva as a sample. The results are available in 24h to 7 days. The test is highly accurate and
does not require further confirmation. It indicates active coronavirus infection, but cannot show whether you ever had COVID-19 in the past.
The antigen test, also known as rapid diagnostic test, uses nasopharyngeal swab and / or throat swab as a sample. The results are available in 1h or less. Positive results have high accuracy, while negative results need to be confirmed by a molecular test in some cases. It indicates active coronavirus infection. A negative test does not rule out an active infection.
The antibody test, also known as serological test, uses blood, serum and plasma as a sample. The results are available in a few hours. It is necessary to repeat the test in some cases. This test is used to show whether you have been infected in the past, but cannot be used to diagnose an acute infection.
Molecular test | Antigen test | Antibody test | |
---|---|---|---|
Also known as | Diagnostic test (RT-PCR) | Rapid diagnostic test | Serological test |
Sample | Nasopharyngeal swab and / or throat swab, saliva | Nasopharyngeal swab and / or throat swab | Blood, serum, plasma |
Results received in | 24h to 7 days | Up to 1 hour | A few hours |
Is an additional test needed? | This test has a high accuracy and usually does not need to be confirmed | Positive results have high accuracy. Negative results need to be confirmed by a molecular test in some cases | Sometimes it is necessary to repeat the test |
What does it indicate? | Diagnosis of active coronavirus infection | Diagnosis of active coronavirus infection | Whether you have been infected in the past |
What it does not indicate | Whether you ever had COVID-19 in the past | A negative test does not rule out an active infection | Cannot be used to diagnose an acute infection |
